How To Become Ambidextrous

Wouldn’t it be so awesome to be able to do everything equally as well with both hands? Well, it’s possible! I’m not gonna lie and say there’s some easy trick, because there isn’t, it will take a lot of work with your non-dominant hand. Although there are some lucky people who are gifted with abidexterity….

Your dominant hand (or hands) is determined by your brain during development and although you can’t change this, it’s relatively easy to train your non-dominant hand to perform useful tasks almost as well as your dominant hand. The key to increasing your ability with your other hand is to use it, this will create new neurological pathways in your brain, making the use of the hand much easier.

Use Your Hand More
Use your non-dominant hand! Remember to do or try everything with your other hand, instead of using your dominant hand for most things. Try writing, eating, brushing your teeth and everything you can think of with your non-dominant hand. The more you use it, the better it will get!

Try Something Different
If you don’t already, try learning an instrument. Instruments such as piano and guitar require a certain level of ambidexterity and can help you train both hands. If you’re not very musical you could always try typing with only your left hand.

Mirror Your Actions
It sounds really, really stupid but try to mirror everything you do with your other hand. So if you’re drinking something and using your right hand to hold the cup, mirror the action with your left hand. Try this with writing and eating also.

More Tips

  • Switch your mouse from your right hand to left or vice versa
  • If you skate, learn to switch skate. This will help train your brain to do things with both side of your body, not just your hands
  • Try shaving with your non-dominant hand, but be careful not to poke your eye out or something
